Choosing your CoWorking Space

Brought to you by SoBeCoWorks

So what space is best for you?

When deciding what coworking environment to join, there is no “absolute” correct answer. It’s very personal.

What is your personality?
Clearly if you are a true loner, then coworking may not be for you. But, you can still get a private space if offered as an option.
Are you a social butterfly? Do you like having others around, even if only “knowing” they’re there. There are many spaces like that.
Or maybe, you like to interact with other people in your environment. Ask questions, offer assistance, etc., there are spaces like that as well.

What do you “need”?
So, what do you need as opposed to what you want? If you do not drive, is the space on or near a bus stop? If you do drive, is there ample parking or parking at all?
What is your real budget? You may want the fancy new space in the heart of town, but if what you can truly afford is 1/3 of their fee, you need to find something within your budget.
What will you actually be using the space for? Will you be meeting clients and holding meetings? If not, you may not really need the conference room that comes with the space. Will you need to accept mail at your space? Not all spaces offer mail delivery or do you already have a long-term P.O. Box? If so, you really do not need their service.
Do you need to manufacture products? There are specialty spaces for that as well as spaces for tech and most anything else.

How do you “feel” once you have visited a space?
A space can look fabulous in print, online and in photos but, unless you visit and talk to a few people to get a feel of the atmosphere, you will not know until it’s possibly too late.

Lease Length
Some spaces offer month to month, daily and annual rates. Make sure their payment options fit your needs. As an absolute start up, you may not be comfortable signing an annual agreement, you may even want to start with the drop in/daily rates.

Hours
Many people start businesses while they have a regular 9-5 jobs which means you may need to start “work” at 6 or 7pm. Make sure their hours are flexible enough to work for you, including weekends.
